I have just setup on using only 5 things
pppd
ssh
pty-redir (needed for pppd to work over ssh)
a vpn script
sudo to run pppd as root on the remote machine with a bit of security
look under the mini howto's and there is a vpn howto there
(it works great using openssh or the not so free ssh) or a mixture of both
:-)
