I too have optus@home. I was a bigpond customer and moved in Jan when they
changed the pricing.
I run linux as a masquerading firewall. Setting the thing up is no problem.
Since there is no metering of traffic, there is no login, just a dhcp client
to run. (Trap for young players - send your customer id as your host id). It
turns out that your customer id can be used to nslookup your ip address even
though they are dynamically assigned.
There have been some teething problems with bandwidth to external (external
to @home) sites occasionally being very low - as low as 8kbytes a second.
Optus has been quite responsive in dealing with the issue, their help desk
is actually helpfull (AND admit when they do not know what is going on and
pass you up the chain - this is such a refreshing change from the bigpond
helpdesk).
>From internal sites I get about 300Kbytes/second.
I routinely get 100kbytes/second+ from mirror.aarnet.edu.au which is
outstanding as far as I am concerned. I downloaded mandrake 7.0 iso from
aarnet in about 45 minutes on Saturday afternoon which is about
250kbytes/second.
>From the states varies as one might expect. I feel a little disappointed if
I don't get 40kbytes/second plus from a big us site, which I consider
excellent. From bigpond I would rarely get more than 20kbytes/second.
The no server rule is a pain, but at least they are completely upfront about
what they will and will not allow. If you don't like it get something else.
