He could use the ALSA SBLive driver which is part of the standard ALSA driver package 
at http://www.alsa-project.org/ . This has OSS support as well so you should be able 
to run most sound apps.  Version 5.2 of the alsa driver works fine with SBLive for PCM 
but doesn't support the SBLive wave tables.  5.3 is out and the readme says something 
about sblive wavetable support I think so maybe it's working now (I'll be trying it 
soon).

Just running through the install instructions will ensure it's started up at boot time.
