I've dragged my kids school from : a couple of pentiums used for admin and a row of 286/386/486 used for dos arcade games, to a fully networked school with a pc in every office and classroom all with net access, and our own domain name with email addresses for all. linux had an important place in this but maybe only a third of the solution is linux based. i used an www.e-smith.net distro with support from www.gormand.com.au this is running on a p75 with 32mb of ram, providing file serving, email, web and other less glamous services. non linux skills were obtaining 2nd hand pc's , repairing existing ones, installing cableing and hubs. determining skill levels, selecting programs, writing documentation, writing batch files to automate updates and backups. getting peer networking up, first sorting out NIC's, setting up printing getting a feel for head office limits, finding your way around funding. my head is still spinning after a year. what was the question again ? the benefits of linux ? local sites ? depends where you school is up to, what the staff know and want.
