I cannot comment on pricing I'm afraid...
But might I mention that root nameservers don't go through a trivial amount
of bandwidth, and they have to be on good quality bandwidth, employees to
run things don't come free ( I certainly wouldn't work here for free and
starve, nothings THAT cool ), and there are a miriad of other things...
Suffice it to say we probably don't make much at all from au.com
registrations... compated to how much it costs to do.
