I do both. I stream the video to a file and then either to a viewer
or/and to a ftp client (under xawtv) to my web page (which I haven't
updated for a while).
I am undertaking to modifying Nemesis (the hotel video security
system) as the basis for my possum work including auto-detection and
major video streaming of multiple cameras, but this will take a while.
The cameras I got from www.allthings.com.au (cheapest) and JayCar
Parramatta for $200 odd. The B&W are the best for IR work as they
operate a 0.2-0.5 lux whereas the Colour ones only go down to 0.9-2.5
lux (which is a big difference). The reason is the colour camera are
B&W CCD with colour filters (3) and the DSP amalagated these streams.
This is standard for CCD's. The higher performance camera(s) cost
are a factor of ten++ more and use different DSP's and
image filter techniques / solutions.
So, go B&W with IR Leds for lighting. This gves you a 5m range
generally, but most of the time external light at night (eg. Moon
etc) adds a lot more light source (and you can & do get night
shadows effects).
