After some major drive reshuffling .. the problem is now fixed.

Thanks to all those that offered help.

The fix was to move the drive linux was on from /dev/hdd to /dev/hdb ...
to work around the BIOS problem. Lilo couldnt read from /dev/hdd at bootup
as per BIOS limits.
