You don't mount a tape as you do a hard disk
try tar cvf /dev/tape files, e.g.
my SCSI tape is tar cvf /dev/st0 / I think (it might be /*.
I've never tarred my files for backup.
Aah, no I remember, you have to find all the files you want then stick
them in a file and feed that to tar, anyway man tar or wait for all
the replies to this msg {:-)
dd if you are mad, cpio seems good, but I like the idea that I might
be able to find files without searching every tape for it and so play
with BRU for single boxes, or Arkeia for networks and various OSs as
clients.
There are other Open Source solutions that do indexing and keep
databases, etc., but I've not kept track of them.
