I see little point in this argument but as I have O@H and use it with
Linux I will but in.
Executive summary, O@H do issue some restrictions on what you can do
with your computer as it relates to _their_ cable service. Anything else
you do with it is not of their concern.
If anyone wants to debate this further lets take it to
news:aus.net.access or news:athome.aus.general . This is already way of
topic, although the firewalling aspect was no, IMHO.

They don't tell you what to do with your computer, they tell you what is
acceptable use of their cable modem service, part of which is you can
not _run_ a servers as defined below in the Acceptable Use Policy.

without the written consent of Optus. For example, you cannot provide
Internet access to others through a dial up connection, host shell

consumer product designed for your personal use of the Internet.
For example, the service does not provide the type of security,
upstream performance and total downstream throughput capability
typically associated with commercial use.
You may not run a server in connection with the Optus @Home residential
service, nor may you provide network services to others via the Optus
@Home residential service. The Optus @Home residential service includes

Note the first sentance in the above paragraph, "in connection with" and
"via the Optus @Home". You can run any service or services you like,
just don't do it with or over their cable.

2. Your Computer
2.1
In order to access the Service, you must provide a computer,
equipped to the minimum recommended computer requirements
('Minimum Computer Requirements' - refer to the Optus
@Home web site for the current list) specified by Optus,
and the power required to run it. You (and not Optus) are
responsible for your computer and its operation.
2.2
If your computer does not meet the Minimum Computer
Requirements, you will not be able to successfully access,
operate or use the Service. In addition, you will not be
entitled to receive customer support relating to any
issue other than the quality of the signal delivered to your
cable modem.
So they do say a little about your computer and its minimum
requirements. All they say is you wont be able to access the service
(not that you can't have it) and that you will not get support. Sounds
resonable to me.
There is also a section on what you can and can't do with the software
they give you. Of course for Linux you don't need it so it does not
matter.
