I'm trying to get back into electronics and some development stuff and
just tried to get hold of a DTMF encoder chip on the weekend, now Dick
Smith and Jaycar don't stock them (they have the decoder's). Another
thing I'll probably be after is the cheapest barcode decoder chip I
can find. Last time I dealt with this stuff was about 1992 and a Welsh
Allyn chip was around $500. I know it's gotta be a lot cheaper
nowadays..
I think I can get by for the moment with 'dial' which I managed to
find amongst the sound utilities in the debian distribution - a
great little command line utility - just hold the phone up to your
little speakers. I can probably borrow a CCD scanner from someone for
a day.
Also, I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of computer related
kits from both DSE, Jaycar and also Oatley Electronics. Oatley have
always had the really interesting stuff and are quite innovative at
recycling stuff. EG Who would go and buy a micro record player these
days? ... what if it was sold as a cheap lab audio amplifier?
Oh yeah... if anyone has any suggestions for Linux related electronic
ideas I'll consider building them for a price. I know I'll be looking
at all the cheap I/O boards on offer and naturally trying to come up
with Linux drivers.
