Like several others on this list I have now connected to the internet
via Optushome.
I ran into a couple of snags along the way so I thought I would post
this "How I did it" for any others who might want to do the same and who
know as little as I did.
I have three computers here forming a mini LAN all running SuSE 6.3. To
get Optus installed I converted this machine to dual boot with Windows
95 on a 500MB partition. The existing NIC was a DE205-AC with an io
base address of 0x300 using irq 5 and 2kB of shared memory from D0000 to
D07FF.
The Optus man installed a PCI NIC but as others on this list had
reported that they could not get it to work properly under linux I
decided to add another DE205-AC which I had for use as eth1. This was
set to io=0x340 irq=11 and mem D0800 - D0FFF using a DOS utility which
came with the original network card. My original intention was to
connect to Optus via eth1 but I could not get the card recognised this
way.
What did work was
1.
edit /etc/modules.conf to load two instances of the ewrk3 driver as
shown in the four lines beginning
alias eth0 ewrk3
in the attached /etc/modules.conf file.
2.
Under YAST make eth0 active getting its IP address by dhclient and make
eth1 the interface for the LAN (192.168.0.1)
3.
Uncomment the line
send host-name "xxxxxxxxxxxx"
in the file /etc/dhclient.conf Replace the xxxxxxxxxxx with your Optus
"Computer name"
4.
Create a script to set up some packet filtering rules both for
protection of your computer and also to avoid upsetting Optus. The
attached script is based on one supplied by John Clarke in a posting to
this list dated 9th April. (I hope it works!)
5.
Move the LAN cable to the new network card, connect the Optus cable
modem to the old card, reboot and run the script protect.
