I recently had a problem with my system where windows overwrote the
master boot record getting rid of linux. I figured I could boot up off
my linux boot disk and just run Lilo again, except my boot disk had bad
sectors. So did my backup boot disk. I was using slackware 7.0 at teh
time, so I booted up off their reference file system disk and mounted
teh existing partitions. I tried to figure out how to run lilo such
that
1) It used a specified file rathe rthe deafult /etc/lilo.conf (in this
case /mount/hda5/etc/lilo.conf)
2) It installed using the settings in that file, even if they didn't
appear correct because I was booting off a CD and not the HDD so the
kernal didn't currently exist where the lilo.conf file said it did.
I ended up wiping the linus partition and reinstalling; I'd just
installed and wanted to use a different set of options so I din't lose
anything by doing this. However if I wanted to keep the existing linux
installation (as would be the case normally) how would I have done this?
