Yup.
We use it at work with a 4G DDS-2 tape drive, and it runs once a night
from cron. Very smooth. The only problem i've had with it has been due
to cron deciding not to run.
I suggest getting "Unix Backup and Recovery" from O'Rielly, also look
at www.backupcentral.com, the website behind the book. There is a whole
chapter devoted to amanda.
It's quite configurable, it claims to work with jukes as well as single
tape drives, optical boxes, write-once drives, etc, though i've not had
the hardware to try out anything fancier.
It is based on tar or dump, but from the way it lays out the backup on
the tape, this isn't a shortcoming (you are given instructions on how to
recover from tapes when the amanda system packs it in too, using mt and
tar)
As it's free software, it does require a lot of work to start it up.
Previous backup experience would make it a lot easier (something I
didn't have ;) But it's well suited to our operation, and i like it ;)
