The README for StarOffice says :

Tips for Successful Installation

Login as usual with your user identification and run the "setup" program from th
e directory /solaris/office51. Select the type of installation and an installati
on directory. You must have write-access to the installation directory.
To carry out a network installation (multi-user installation), please start the
setup with the /net option. After the network installation, it is necessary that
each user who wants to work with StarOffice runs the setup from the bin directo
ry of the network installation with the own user ID (WITHOUT/net). A workstation
installation will be then available. This installs per user approximately 2 MB
of data in the corresponding Home directory.
A multi-user installation is only permitted with the respective number of licens
es.
So basically if you install it without /net you are installing a single-user
only version, which should be installed as the user you will run it as.
If you install it with /net you can run it as multiple users (and I'd expect
you'd normally install it as root).
