it's nothing new, Solaris (and SunOS before it) has had a calendar
manager for yonks that does exactly that. We used to use it at my
previous job for managing bookings of conference rooms, vehicles
and such like. Actually we also use it here to automatically send
reminder emails to whoever's turn it is this week to swap the backup
tapes.
