Wouldn't surprise me if the eth0 has to be brought up manually with a
ifconfig eth0 up too...

Turns out that the box had re-booted during the night
(power fluctuations - yes, the UPS goes in tonight !!),
and the BIOS was re-mapping the IRQ/IO of the network
card !!
