There may be something in the /var/log/messages file about the eth0 dying.
If your running DHCP client then maybe the expiry is 1/2 or 1 day and it
doesn't receive a new IP...?? Though when it can't reconnect to the server
it usually doesn't kill a eth0 device just because it can't get a new IP....
Trya static IP first to determine the problem if possible...

I am a newbie to Linux, and am trying to get up to speed quickly.
Twice or three times in the past week I have set up Linux boxes on spare PCs
at
work, and had them networking fine. I can ping in and out, I can Telnet into
the
box, I can even http to the web page showing Apache is working. However,
the
next day there would be no networking, and when I do an "ifconfig" only the
loop
back adapter is showing on the screen.
Linuxconfig shows eth0 is still configured (as it was before) to use DHCP
auto-assigned ip addresses, but the card isn't even showing up in "ifconfig"
and
I can't ping anything.
This has happened with Mandrake 7.0 (lovely quick install) and with Suse
6.4
(faultless easy install). It hasn't happened yet to a Red Hat 6.1 install,
but
with that one I am having difficulty getting the Xwindows setup 100% right
for
an Nec Multisync V500 monitor. (When I type "X" the screen comes up right,
the
mouse works, but there is nothing to read or click on. Huh?)
I am going crazy over this. Where do I begin, please? The hardware is not
faulty. I have tested it. (Nec Valuemate Pentium II, 350 MHz, 64Mb ram, 3Gb
IDE
drive, 8Mb video ram, sound, Intel 82558 ethernet card on motherboard). Wish
I
had one at home... <grin>
