Well,
I started out with Slackware 1.0, applied various patches, updates etc...
imho ... VERY NICE and stable.ps: not too many changes back then as there is
now...
I was VERY happy with it and thought linux is 'the way of the future'...
downloaded kernels, X and other stuff to 'optimise' my system... this was
great fun and great to learn all the info about linux then... then.. it
exploded with zillions of apps and proggies and was too hard to keep up with
all the source code and compiling it for optimisation... I pretty much was
an 'enthusiast' and wanted an all-round system with all the functionality i
could invoke onto it...
... ... then went to RH 4.1 - 6.1... I was VERY happy with the RH distro's
and thought they were quite flavoursome and it had a heap of stuff for
almost any application you put the system to...
I even tried TurboLinux for a tad... nice, fast, reliable and quite a clean
installation...
... ... ...and I now use Caldera Open Linux 2.3 (still nuttin it out
though.. esp kernel compiling.. etc... and modules...) I just wanted
somethiing a bit more diferent...
Future.. I will try to use Corel and suse for investigating... but am REALLY
awaiting a distro with kernel 2.4x, XFree4.x and KDE 2.x (hopefully with
integrated gnome libraries, and pre configured SQL of sorts, and hopefully
some sort of full featured IDE (inprise tools maybe???))...
Oh, I started on the linux jugernaught on a 486dx50 with 8mb ram, 300mb
HDD... ran nice... I also use it on my Toshiba CD200 (P133, 16mb, 1.1gbHDD),
and on my current system.. a clone 166mmx, 128mb Ram (no swap), 2.1Gb hdd
S3/virge/DX + Voodoo2 12mb... 28.8k ext modem.. and am VERY happy with the
performance / processing power for a FULL 32 system.

I wasn't impressed at all with SuSe and get annoyed at the way
RedHat do things and the places they put stuff.
Mandrake is just RH with KDE installed as default WM isn't it?
Which doesn't seem to leave much choice funnily enough.
I'm waiting for the new debian (potato), and am also going to try
the Caldera one. If all else fails I might go back to the good
old faithful slackware - at least I could understand how it worked
and how it all fitted together.
