6 - 9 months ago there was an article in the Linux Journal about monitoring
web sites.  It would retrieve a page using (I think) some perl and compare
a couple of words from that page to some expected result..  This has the
advantage of actually checking whether the thing is working.  Lots of
services could crash but ping would still work.
