the free ltmodem stuff from linmodems.org supposedly can detect
dialtone, ring, detect answer, cope with v.21 (300 baud!), then hang
up. (i think its lucent modem only at this stage). the australian
dialtone details seemed to be commented out, so i haven't actually
tried it past the modem diagnostics stage.
i had a similar (tho less urgent) experience with my toshiba
laptop. comes with win95 and 98 installed and when you boot you get to
choose and it erases the other one. (a condition of me buying the
laptop was that she could use it too).
win98 didn't survive the fips'ing when i installed linux, so i had to
reinstall `98.. the restore program on the cd's (and their
documentation) were refreshingly unclear as to what would happen to my
partition table, so i did it by hand..
read through the convoluted mess of .bat scripts and ramdisks and
managed to extract it all. the most fun bit was using running a
proprietry compression/extraction program under dosemu, to extract
from a file on a loopback mounted disk image on the cd onto the
laptop's windows partition (which of course i had mounted over nfs ;)
