On my new Athlon 600, ReiserFS screams along.
Then, the machine is SCSI with 128M RAM (a Cetus tech special :).
Is it possible that your machine has a small real memory space, so it is
thrashing?
Theoretically, any journalling filesystem will have a slightly higher memory
overhead than a non-journalling FS simply because there are more tables to
worry about (well, at least in XFS according to the SGI lecture at the Open
Source conference; can't see that ReiserFS would be that different).
command line vs e: You won't notice command line differences as shell stuff
gets cached. E is heavy on disk swapping if you have a small memory
footprint.
