Well, yes, you can just boot from a floppy if the machine has a floppy
drive.
The main thing about RAID 1 is that a hard disk crash whilst the machine is
running does not get noticed by users.
Suppose your system had to run in a remote site full of untrained people.
In that case you might want to put /boot in RAID 1 as well but otherwise I
don't see the point if you are going to be there and boot it off a floppy.

partition? I have got all the other partitions mirrored but not /boot and
another one that doesnt matter (/dos). In linux how does crash recovery get
affected if the disk with the /boot dies? Can't i just boot off a floppy
disk and get the system back up and running? How is the boot process
affected if say one of the disks isnt there anymore?
