i think most of it can be summed up by the maintainers' quest for
clean upgrades.
whenever you are doing something, think about what will happen on an
upgrade, or a change from one alternative to another (nvi <-> vim, or
something). if you will have to manually redo your changes, you are
probably doing it wrong (or you have very specific needs).
and remember: "but suslackaldehat does it this way" is never a reason
why it *should* be that way ;)
