why does a ps on my machine show these 2 nmbd process
that have been running since 1 March?

root 1776 0.0 0.9 2240 1236 ? S Mar01 0:01 nmbd -a
root 1777 0.0 0.7 2160 944 ? S Mar01 0:00 nmbd -a

nmbd and smbd are run from inetd, not as standalone
processes, here's the line from /etc/inetd.conf:

netbios-ns dgram udp wait root /usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/sbin/nmbd
-a

This machine is a samba server (obviously).

Dave.
