I mostly use Xmovie now, from the Heroine Virtual guy(s):

I've found Xmovie to be more polished than Xine. But it won't play some MPEG
files, so I use plaympeg or xine then.
I've also been hacking with their other MPEG tools to *cough* transcode DVDs
*cough* :)
