I have not done this with 8.9.X but try this.
remove all the spam checking stuff from the mc file.
Try the following (these are instructions from an old SCO tech support
article)
Edit the sendmail.cf (I know yeach...),
ensure the OI entry in the OPTIONS section is
OI-DNSRCH
Create a new section:
# Service.Switch to eliminate DNS lookups
O Service.SwitchFile=/etc/service.switch
create a /etc/service.switch file (chmod 644'd) with the following one line:
hosts files
As I said these are old instructions but they may work.

I hope you are doing it thus:
in mailertable:
domainname.com.au stmp:[relayhost]
The square brackets should eliminate DNS resolution.
