Paul, I have a radeon 8500 and it is supported only in 2D and only under the very latest xfree 4.2.0 (I went the redhat beta route to get this xfree version). The problem I've found is that there seem to be MANY different radeons, and they don't seem to bear any relationship to each other. For instance the radeon 7500 and the radeon 8500 are very different beasts. I think the 7500 has some sort of 3d support but I'm not sure). Nvidia seems to be the card of choice for fast 3d graphics under linux, but it is only supported via binary only modules. My other machine has a matrox g400max, and that IS a nice card which is well supported 2D and 3D with open source (as far as I know -- everythinglinux should know precisely.) It's great for 2D but the 3D is not the fastest out there. Only an issue if you play quake3 or latest wolfenstein.
