if I remove the last line, then the connection is established
promptly. All of the local network works as expected.

Once bigdog is connected to the ISP, then adding the default
line makes everything work ok. Again, everthing works as expected.

The problem only occurs when bigdog is not connected to the ISP and
the default route is in place.
