My O2 box here in front of me says:

1 200 MHz MIPS Processor
IRIX Release 6.5

If you put Linux on it the graphics performance will be much lower.
There is lots of freeware available at:
http://freeware.sig.com

That site has vim, netscape, nedit, audio, games, and much of the stuff
from GNU and other places that you would have put on a Linux box.
The install of these is easy with the SGI packaging system, just pooint
and click at the packages. Dependencies are worked out and you can opt
to not install or to install the dependencies as well. Check out the
games and demos.
I see little advantage in Linux on an O2 and lots of disadvantages.
