Yeh - I knew that comment would get some hackles up ;)  I've just never had 
ANY success with RPM after the database gets hosed.  In one case I spent 
over a week (working with Red Hat support) and still ended up with a 
non-functioning RPM :-/

I switched to Debian over 4 years ago and never had any such dramas - even 
with Debian-unstable.  In fact, this problem with apt/dpkg on Monday is the 
first problem I couldn't fix with the standard apt/dpkg command line tools.  
I guess this is one of those "YMMV" type arguments - we all have our "2am 
horror stories" which usually gives us a bias one way or another.
