Just saw a post on slug-chat about email to SMS gateways. Thought I'd contribute (and move it to slug, as its quite Linux related). if you want a solution that doesn't require specialist hardware, check out smssend. It interfaces with web sms gateways to automate the sending of messages and as a result its perfect for using in aliases and forward files.
I use mine with optus's info2you web site.
