You can do a complete backup and because it is an external unit, remove
it from the machine and store off site.

Get 2 or 3.  You have complete maybe even bootable backups of your
machine.

thats what i am suggesting. minus the booting part.
only i recommend firewire over usb2.
i have had a lot of trouble with usb2 whether that be a kernel problem or chipset, it caused massive cpu overhead and was slower than firewire on a few different test machines i have tried
