I spent some time fiddling with docbook and a bibliography tool called
"refdbib" from memory (thought it used to be in debian, but maybe not)
but in the end went back to latex and bibtex as well.  The idea of word
processing a thesis using a Word-like application strikes me with great
fear.  Now that that the thing is finished, and tools like latex2html
and, god forbid, latex2rtf, seem to have improved a great deal, I'm glad
I bounced down the LaTeX road...
