Are you sure you're not loosing packets? I've seen issues where some magic box in the network decided to mostly drop/shape UDP packets, causing NFS to act very strage. Try mounting with TCP and see if that helps, or trace it using ethereal; you'll quickly see if it is sending a lot of retry packets. -i
