Not certain but if the ATI video drivers are anything like the Nvidia one's which require to be compiled against the current kernel to produce new modules, then your going to have to rebuild the ATI kernel modules against the new kernel, install them and reboot.
Dig a little deeper on how the ATI card is being driven, my guess its a kernel module thats not part of the kernel tree (much like Nvidia).
