Dear Carmel,

I was quite saddened & extremely disappointed to see the student

relying on proprietary software, when open-source equivalents would

been far more secure, maintainable cost-effective & educational. What
"experts" advised the department on the deployment of this key
infrastructure? Could you please forward my email to them and ask
them
to respond? I don't think their choice was justifiable, and
contradicts
the ideals of public education.

I'm sure there are plenty of efficacious ways to spend the
department's
(read "our") money; lining the pockets of Mr Gates isn't one of them.

What's this all about?

It's about this monstrosity: https://*portal*.*det*.*nsw*.edu.au

Still struggling to understand exactly what proprietary software is at issue - the original post doesn't go into any detail. Anyone on the list who doesn't have a login on the DET portal can't really view the message in context.
