Thanks for the reply.
I was running Mint 2.2. Afer installing Mint 4 ( gnome Live CD version),
installing "restricted" nvidia driver ( mx440 card) and adjusting
monitors controls all is almost well ( desktop just a fraction too far
right) and I get 1680x1050 at60hz .
