When I have had my notebooks repaired I have actually sent them
without the hard-disk.
I mainly do that on the basis of the fact that 1. I need access to my
data 2. I don't want to give the repairer that same access.
Of course this isn't quite as easy with the flash based system. ( I
know the Asus EEE 901 16GB SSD is removable, but I think the 4GB
system drive is not user removable).

Good point, I would also have concerns too about leaving my data around.
However, the problem I encountered was before I started actually using the
computer. And the system wouldn't boot up at all, I was new to Linux, so I was
in a bit of a panic. Life is sweet before there is any risk to your data - you
can reinstall operating systems to your heart's content.
Which ofcourse brings us to the Google Aps/Netbook (and for us oldies the
Terminal) model - where your data is safely on a server somewhere and all you
need is a browser.
