sounds like activex is disabled in the browser, not an un-common occurence MS don't trust there own programming language anymore, I wouldn't suggest IE 8 as they have locked down ActiveX even more. To check it go to tools, internet options, security and (depending on the zone the site is in; internet, restricted or trusted) click on custom level and enable the activex controls. You could simply add the site to your trusted zone and then change it in there if it doesn't already work.
