I have tried CentOS & Ubunto older cersion installation CD, can't recognise
the controller. I guess I need either to recompile the kernel or download
their latest version to try. Thanks.

Have you even tried one of them yet? http://ishouldbecoding.com/tag/linux -
this one seems to mention _nothing_ about Kubuntu _not_ working with that
controller. FYI, 82801 is pretty standard. Furthermore, Intel hardware is
pretty standard; Linux-friendly.

If Windows needs a driver, it doesn't mean Linux would too. Such support is
built into kernel modules like intel_piix for ICH chipsets.

I could tell you that Gentoo Linux supports it for sure because you
need to configure and compile kernel yourself :) but no, it's not
about distro .. even your favorite distro might not support it by
default you still have a lot of options to enable it:
- upgrade to the latest
- re-compile kernel yourself with required driver enabled
- patch it yourself

I mean I wouldn't change distro just because it doesn't support
something by default.

My lazy 5 cents.
