Some trivia:
All 3.5G/HSDPA USB Sticks are powered by Qualcomm chipsets. (they
dominate the entire market)
All sticks are dual-mode, meaning, they are a CDROM on power-up and
becomes a few (2 or 3) serial ports upon reset. (Cypress patent)
The connection method is via pppd over usbserial via AT commands much
like an analog modem (no special drivers needed and hence works on Linux)
Newer sticks + HSO driver manufactured by Option support AT commands to
make the modem connect directly
I do get faster speeds on my mobile broadband (1.1Mbps) than my 8Mbps
(50kbps) cable connection, esp after dinner time (prime time).
And yes, Ubuntu does support the USB sticks out of the box (>8.04), or
after an update if you have installed an earlier version.
