My own answer to a similar problem is:
- retain wired broadband, cos wired performance >> wireless performance
- send sms using scripted interaction with the starhubgee website (see
starhubGeeSms on http://autosms.uuuq.com)
- use wirel...@sgx where available
- leverage on my mobile phone's 3G broadband (I'm using joikuspot with my
symbian-based phone to share its 3G connection over wifi - similar software
exist with other phone OS) So I'm currently paying ~ $5/mth for the 10 mths
in the year that 10MB of traffic suffices, which comes in handy for all
those times where a notebook is not necessary or available. It's also
capped at ~ $30/mth for the rare cases where I do need more traffic (eg,
when I'm stuck in camp serving my reservist duties).
