Ussualy with a spectrum analyzer but there are alot of pcmcia cards with
utilities that will allow you to "scan" the air.
(Teletronics, Symbol, etc)

If it used to work in the past and gives you trouble now then it is either
interference or insulation issue. I assume you changed different channels
and possibly antenna polarization ?

Not physically. Simply set the AP Client in AP mode and vice versa on the
AP via the AP manager utility.
