Possibly you have some interference, and not an overheating issue.  I have seen this myself, and it happened when some wise guy decided to put up a linksys AP and share out his connection with his neighbors.  It was running on the same channel as our AP.  You might do a little war driving and see what you can see before you assume it is the AB.

Subject: [smartBridges] Overheating Airpoint Outdoor Pro ?

Hello All,

I have an Airpoint Outdoor Pro (later reffered as AP) which I’ve been using for 2 months now with no problems. It is operating in Client Bridge mode with

Firmware version 1.6j6.

It’s been over 10 days I am having serious problems with it. The Link Quality graph on the Link Status graph appears spiky with values ranging from

90% to 60% at all times and changing constantly every 2 secs (Usually It was steady on 90-95%). I’m using the FTP service on a remote computer to check the speed of the link and I was surprised to see that I was downloading with an average of 3-10kb/sec and the transfer rate was also going up and down until in a couple of minutes the transfer failed. Note that my AP is never disassociated from the host AP (I tried the v1.6j8 firmware with no change in my situation)

After a lot of tests I got angry and unplugged the AP from the power and let it cool for about 20 minutes. When I plugged it back on It seemed to be working perfect , with the Link Graph I was used to have and FTP transfer rates I always enjoyed, but only for a minute or less. It fell back to this state I described earlier. I repeated the on/off test for the same period and I had the same results.

I believe that something is overheating. But I wonder, is it the power supply that goes nuts or the AP itself ? Anyone with experience on this matter would be very helpful.

Thank you,

Christos Ventouris.
