It all depends on the warranty statement. I don't understand or see why people think that if they have a unit that is used that needs RMAd why you should get a NEW unit ? Your unit isn't new is it ? If it's dead out of the box yes then you should have a new unit. But if the unit been in service honestly do you think you should get a new unit ?? If you think you should get a new unit then expect to see price of the equipment go up because there isn't enought margin to do this.
We done computer sales and service for 7 years. There are not many companies out there that will give you a brand new unit when you get your rma'd unless the problem been DOA or broken within the first few months. For example Canon will give you a new printer if yours fail within 3 months of purchase if it's more then 3 months you will either get yours repaired or replaced with a refurbished. Western Digital Corp, Maxtor, Quantum, Seagate and all other harddrive manufacturers I dealted with reserves their right to send you a refurbished harddrive (some of them will give you a brand new unit if it failed within the first 6 months of their 36 months warranty). Same goes for many motherboard manufacturers they either send you a refurbished or repaired board. I gotten boards repaired by DFI, Gigabyte and ASUS just to mention a few. What I do NOT like however is when you have to argue and go through tons of hoopes to get something RMAed ESPECIALLY when it's a DOA. I talked with a guy the other day and he had been held on the phone for 3 (three) hours trying to work out problems with some bad units (I understand some of those where bad out of the box and some and gone bad in less then a month). But also a refurbished unit is not supposed to look like crap with pealed of tape corners and that kind of things. Many companies they replace the outside casing (after all it's just cheap plastic with some stickers on it) so the product looks "representable" (I hope sB is listning here).
