Agreed. A Win32 client is a pretty bad choice. Telnet/ssh or http(s) is preferred.
Also, having to match the firmware with the release of the software is a pain too, since you need to make sure ALL your techs run the same version of the software, or units will get downgraded if another tech looks at them.
