Looks like overkill but is definitly not especially when just about 2 weeks ago the world was complaining about lighning and emp protection and building codes etc. As for compliance like nish said the new devices will be complaint the old devices were proprietary not by compliance to 802.3af

Hello Don,
Thanks for the comments. As you are suggesting, we are indeed moving to
802.3af compliance. All our new products will support that. The PoEO has
a "classic" mode to work with the existing models.
In addition, the PoEO includes the protection and grounding circuits
also, which is a requirement for meeting the building code complaint
installations. This requires the unit to be mounted outside, just prior
to the cable run entering the premises.
Hope this explains the rational for the product concept.
Nish

It's nice that you are thinking about a better POE unit but why not
just make your product lines 802.3af compliant. This POE unit looks
like overkill and will probably be overpriced. As an example the Seano
CB3 is 802.3af compliant so we can use the stock power supply and
passive injector or if the run is to long for the sock power supply we
can use an active POE like the D-link POE kit.
Heck it shouldn't be that hard to come up with something like the
PowerShot II that would work with current production as well as 802.3af
future production.
