RE: [smartBridges] Cracked Cover on airBridge Outdoor..OKay, as promised, detailed
description for the install from hell. - This is pretty long so... sit back and enjoy

Me and my tech go out to do this install on Monday around 3:00pm. We've got pretty
much everything we need, and no biggie if we don't we're only a mile and 1/2 away from
home base. We set the ladder up, climb up this 8/12 pitch roof and deploy our site
survey rig.. Little 15dbi pac wireless grid and a older outdoor airbridge (the ones
with the 50' pigtail) on a 3' tripod. Hook it all up and we get 50-60% RSSI and
85-95% link quality.. Not bad for not having a complete line of site and mile 1/2 out
and not even really adjusting it too much. We install the nice Ronard eave mount
bracket and put our mast in place.., While my tech is doing that I assemble a 19dbi
pac wireless grid and then start trying to terminate the end of our outdoor rated cat5
cable with the icky-poo gel which took over 40 minutes because the dang thick cable
and the wires wouldn't go all the way in. After that we proceed to water proof the
connection for the antenna. We get it up and start trying to get signal and nothing.
We fiddle around with it for a hour 1/2 trying to get it to work, picking up a LOCAL
access point on channel 11, but not ours... We packed up and headed back to the shop
around 8:00pm I pulled the antenna off and checked it only to discover that it was a
bad feed horn. I pull another from inventory and we go out at 11:00am the next day..
Take the new antenna and access point up and test it.. everything working great... We
check it with the smaller 15dbi, defiantly get a better single with the 19dbi, 65-70%
RSSI, so we water proof it.. and, once again NOTHING!!! So, we bring the whole thing
back down... Instead of removing the waterproofing, I decide to open the radio up to
check the internal connection... Somehow, in this process we managed to break off a
corner of the cover (didn't even discover it till we re-assembled the radio, end up
using the cover of our test rig to replace it with), pulled the SMA connector off, and
checked for continuity, NOTHING.. So we peal the waterproofing off and in the process
the blasted cable pulls out of the N connector!! They didn't crimp it good enough!!
SO.. I pull the feed horn off the 15dbi grid (they're the same feed horn) and change
it out.. test it.. put the first layer of tape and mastic on it, test it again, all is
good, we then finish up the waterproofing... remount the thing, and it's working...
I sent my tech up to route the cable and fix it to the side of the building etc... and
he has to un-plug and re-plug the testing cable, after he does this, the radio looses
association and never gets it back!! So, we bring it down again.. I open the radio
up, and check the sma connector, and we get continuity this time.. So.. I figure this
radio has the bad chip... so I take it inside, put it in the fridge, and the upload
the firmware... and leave it running while we finish routing the cable. We get ready
to go through the brick wall and we use a nice 3/4" drill with a concrete bit, get
about 7 1/2" deep and can't go any further, so we figure we hit something.. We move
over to another spot, 4" above where the AC pipes go through the wall, and try
again... hit 7 1/2" and stops.. Soo... we go off and pick up our hammer drill and end
up having to use a bigger sized bit because the other bit won't work in the hammer
drill... We.. 1 1/2 hours later we finally break through the wall which is 12" thick
(we buried the bit to the hilt) .. I never had so much trouble going through a wall
in my life, that damn bit got stuck 8 or 10 times, would not turn, or anything... Had
to hammer the bit through the wall after we broke through.. We push the cable through
the wall, remount the radio and antenna, get a good solid signal, I put the PoE and
power supply in a bag and zip-tie it and leave it to protect it from rain.. and we
head home around 8:00pm.. I monitored it all night and it work perfectly.. We finish
up the job on the third day without too much problem... I've just never had a job go
SOOOO wrong in my life... That sucked! What a install from HELL!

Thanks, Billy

Subject: [smartBridges] Cracked Cover on airBridge Outdoor..
Well, while dealing with a install from h*ll today, Me and one of my
techs
managed to bust the corner off of the cover on one of our airBridge
Outdoor
units.. I was wondering if it would be possible to obtain a replacement
cover so we can put this unit back into service again.. Would be rather
drastic to have to RMA the unit or ship it off for replacement/repair
for
something this simple..
P.S. I'll give way more details on this install that was from h*ll
later on
tommorrow after I get some sleep.
Thanks, Billy
