Sigh.. I think you need to read up yourself on GPS obviously. I don't
really care how long you have used a GPS or not or where and learn to
understand what is part of the GPS and it's protcol and how it works.

DC> Here is what you do. Go the base of each of your POP towers. Tell the GPS to

You don't need to teach me how to use a GPS.

This has NOTHING to do with the GPS nor the way a GPS as protocol
functions but rather a convenient added function.
A GPS is a device that collect data from the GPS satellites it can
hear and based on the data from them and which ones it hears it can
calculate out the 2D (long, lat) or 3D (long, lat, height) where you are
at.
The waypoints are a extra added feature that you get as a additional
feature thanks to the computer system that is in the GPS to do the
math. A "raw" GPS such as the USB units you can purchase for laptops
is the best example. The GPS receiver only streams a bunch of data it
is then up to your computer to use this data. That your computer can
save the data and give you azimuth bearings between 2 points
(waypoints).

So what you get a bearing. Tell me how do you use your GPS to utilize
or point out this bearing ? You can NOT do that with a standard GPS.

DC> Now that I have distance and bearing, I need a compass to show me which way
DC> 143* is. A GPS will not show you your heading, only your 'course over

BINGO.. As I said from the start. With a normal GPS you can NOT figure
out the the heading your facing (UNLESS YOUR MOVING)..

However as I said 2 posts back there are GPS units that have compass
built in to them that can be used to tell you the bearing your looking
at (not the a calculated bearing).

Now that you have agreed to the point I made originally we can go on
since your now agreeing with the fact that you can not tell the
direction your facing with your GPS but you have to have your compass
to do that.. Which is what I said all along.

DC> ground' or COG. To have a COG, you have to be moving. To get heading while
DC> standing still, you need a compass. I use a lensatic compass like this:
DC> http://www.brasscompass.com/lensaticzinc.htm

Correct. This is what I tried to tell you all the way from the start
of this thread. I'm not the one that needs to go back and learn and
read up on GPS but rather you should go back and reread my posts to
see what I said.

But also there are GPS's that have built in compasses so you have a
single convineient unit and you can have your GPS tell you your
heading while your standing still.
As a example

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000058BCR/104-2946105-4568733?v=glance

http://www.thegpsstore.net/detail_MA61620.asp

To mention a couple that have a built in electronic compass that works
when your standing still and is not based on the GPS satellite data
feed calculations.

So thanks for finally agreeing with me to bad you had to start off
claiming that I needed to do some reading on GPS systems when you
later on agrees to what I said all a long.. sigh..

DC> GPS will not tell direction. GPS only tells you direction while IT is
DC> moving. When your standing still it can't give directions. So GPS used
DC> to figure out what long, lat your on as well altitude on both ends.
DC> Then do the math.
DC> http://www.fament.com/wireless/calculators/azimuth.php
DC> To figure out the Compass direction to aim the antenna.

DC> Up and downtilt can easily be calculated as well. All you need to know
DC> is your ASL (Above See level) your at in both locations (the antennas)

DC> http://www.fament.com/wireless/calculators/downtilt.php
DC> Not entirely designed for this type of calculations but if you
DC> normalize your levels and provide the amount of ' your one antenna end
DC> is over the other antenna. Then by not providing a beamwidth you can
DC> calculate out how far away the signal will hit ground with 0.5* downtilt
DC> or 1* and so forth.

DC> Then you aim in according to best measurements according to your
DC> calculations.
DC> When your dealing with say a 10 mile shoot and a antenna with 6* beam
DC> and you can't see the other end due to distance you have to figure out
DC> where pretty precisely you need to aim. Also when your doing
DC> calculations it's important to know if you get true north or magnetic
DC> north (above calcs are magnetic north). When I got our 12 mile link up
DC> I used a different application that was set (without me knowing) to
DC> give true north which meant it was about 4* off so when we had the
DC> antenna aimed where we compassed out that it was supposed to be we
DC> had no signal. So we took a chance and move it about 4* chancing the
DC> calcs was true north instead of magnetic and SIGNAL. What a relief.
