Kevin I am not really worried about it I let him dig his own grave he is NO
competition I used to do his installs and he could care less about his
customers and it shows and they all know it..

Simply reporting this guy will get absolutely NO action from the FCC.
Look at the back of your unit at the certification plate. It clearly
states, "This unit may not cause harmful interference. This unit must
accept any interference received including interference that may cause
undesired operation." In other words, you are screwed, BUT if your
competitor is causing harmful interference to a public safety entity,
you have something to go on. While you are forced to accept the
interference, he is not allowed to cause harmful interference. The
trick is to prove the interference is harmful.
In order to get the FCC to do ANYTHING at all, you must be able to prove
that the interference is affecting Public Safety. Then you should send
a letter to your Congressman and Senators with a copy of that letter
going to the FCC. They will respond to the people responsible for their
appropriation much faster than they will to you. All correspondence
must be written with copies going to all parties involved.
Yes, there are rules, but there are no victims if they must all accept
any interference. The FCC is not going to enforce the rules unless you
are scrambling the Police Chief's 2.4 gig cordless phone. Let's see...
No victims and no enforcement. What does that tell you?
I know this sounds pessimistic, but it is the truth. It is hard enough
to get the FCC to do something about interference in the licensed bands
and any interference in unlicensed bands must be extreme before they
will look at it at all.

If this guy is running illegal stuff have you reported it? No one likes
to
be a tattle tale but if it negatively affecting your customers then you
are
really left no choice but to do so.
Of course at that point you need to make damn sure everything you are
running is legal. :)

Okay we are using two Pac Wireless 90* H POL sectors each with 50ft of
cable and 250mw amp on each one Motorola Canopy system for backhaul
5.7ghz
(which by the way to the tower pulls a little over 4.3 megs!)
All tied together with a single D-link switch that is working fine and
is
reading the right speed 10 meg 1/2 duplex.
Yes we tried the 2 meg auto fall back on the client and it as suspected
works good for the far clients but still we see problems when the closer
users get on and download the net slows down for the further people.
(only
solution I have for that is putting up another tower closer to the
further
users) Even though they have GREAT signal we are talking 89% -100% RSSI
and
85%-90% Link at the APPO from what the APPO reports.
We have tried the clients associating to one mac AP address instead of
roaming that did not seem to help (tried that when we had association
problems )
I think the problem with the LAN happens to be when the unit sees
interference possibly and loses association then does its watchdog timer
reboot possibly in the middle of sending packets then when it tires to
come
back up it chokes? cause then I look at the statistics under Ethernet it
says the send statistics is at 1??? and the client side receiving is at
over
a meg or more like the client is talking to the radio but the radio is
not
forwarding the packets..
Like I said HOT FRICKING BED here to may wisps just don't give a crap
and
start throwing up illegal stuff to try and cut thru the noise. One of
the
competitors systems I checked out the other day CLEARLY had a YDI 180* V
sector ( I think it is 15db) with 5 FT of LMR 400 going to a 1 watt amp
to
an AP-1000 just blasting away in the valley. Yet this guy says ME of all
people purposely am sending out signals across the valley trying to
block
their signal to just ONE of their customers to try and steal him away
which
they claimed? HAHAH I never even knew the customer he called me and
wanted
to change to a more reliable service and so far he has not been let down
yet
with our system..

I think you stated it best.
"We are also in a hotbed of WISP activity around here that is not
helping
either."
This statement alone is a reason not to use 802.11b. I would not have
high
expectations of the system if you are battling against multiple ISP's
using
802.11b or even any proprietary 2.4Ghz system(s). No firmware in the
world
is ever going to fix that problem because 802.11b is 802.11b. It is
highly
susceptible to noise and interference because it is designed to listen
to
everything.
"The equipment has to be dynamic enough to work in MANY environments"
It will not happen with 802.11b.
Just curious as to what antenna type you are using. Are you using
sectors
or omni's? Are you enabling the roaming function or are you
"statically"
associating the client to use a single AP? I do not use roaming.
You never did reply as to whether or not you are disabling the
auto-fallback
either. Disable it on a client and force the connection to 2Mps and see
if
it helps - you have nothing to lose. I apologize if you have tried this
already, just trying to help.
I found during my initial testing before I had any customers on at all
that
if I was associated pings and simple browsing worked just fine, if I was
to
go to www.toast.net and do a performance test doing both text and image
using toast.net as the host site, the traffic generated across the link
was
enough to kill the association. I would run the test while in the
Simple
Monitor of the client device. The link would clearly drop to zero -
come
back - drop to zero - come back. There were times when I did need to
reset
the client device to get it working again. I could internet browse all
day
long without a glitch. This would happen with 85% signal quality and
good
RSSI.
Is it possible that if this is happening it is creating a buffer problem
on
the device (ethernet side) causing it to just lock up?

Subject: Re: [smartBridges] Beta 1.0.08 locking up Ethernet anyone
else??
Derek,
1. All units had revisions prior to 1.0.08 and most still locked up some
did
not I left those that did we even swapped hardware to supposed NEW CHIP
units with 1.0.07 then they too started to still lock up.
2. After testing with 1.0.08 on a couple clients (BETA TEST) they seemed
to
work fine so to further BETA test for SB as asked we loaded it on many
more
to test even further.
3. Now we have a problem with Ethernet locking up reverting to 1.0.07
fixes
that but then the units lose association and then a truck roll.
4. ALL APPO's have 1.4j.8 Except the couple that are being used as CPE
which
locked up with older revisions and swapped to new hardware we upgraded
those
to Beta 14j.9
5. Out of curiosity I tried 1.4j.9 on the AP to see if that had any
affect
and it slowed the association ability on the app down to nothing almost.
As far as settings go we have tried MANY various settings in the SB
equipment and always reverted back to what work's best and ALL units
have
the same settings.
Like I stated before I don't think the people that are having not as
many or
no problems have the same setups or the demand from the clients as we
do. We
are also in a hotbed of WISP activity around here that is not helping
either. Thats why it was suggested MANY MANY MANY times back to have SB
come
and look at the setups that are still having problems IN the field so
that
they can get real world hands on experience to the problems we are
seeing!
Yet they chose to relay still on a few of use to test the firmware and
we
gave our honest feed back and we are still reporting some things we are
seeing.
What may work for me does not mean it will work for another person the
equipment has to be dynamic enough to work in MANY environments and I
think
SB should focus on the harshest ones such as mine and a few others. If
they
can make it work here then it should work ANYWHERE....
Sending stuff to test Joe schmoo at ABC wireless who is in the middle of
a
desert or town that has ZERO noise or any congestion from other
providers or
having something set up in a clean test room is not the way to stress
test a
system. YOU HAVE TO GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF THE SAND TO SEE THE REAL ISSUES
and
learn how to be able to correct them. It seems that every time there is
an
issue a new firmware bandaid is put out to test and fixes one thing but
has
an affect on another. The units that are NOT having ANY problems are all
units manufactured by the old assembly line which I do believe was
another
company why they changed I am sure they had their reasons but things
have
not been the same since..
I am off my soapbox now.

If you are experiencing the problem with the same clients every time I
would
tend to believe it is a configuration issue - on the client side. If
the
clients are random that you see the problem with then it is either at
the
APO or it could be your observations are correct. What I do know is
that
there are many compnaies out there (many that are members of this site)
that
have that many clients ruinning that are not seeing that problem.
Why are you not running 1.07 on the client and 1.4j.8 on the AP's? Were
you
experiencing some other large problem that you needed to upgrade? Beta
is
just that - beta. I do not think anyone should deploy, especially
network
wide, a beta version of firmware.
The big question, is it always the same clients that experience the
problem?
If you can narrow that down it will tell you where to look. Also, are
you
ruuning the radios to do auto-fallback? If that is the case and the
clients
you experience trouble with have "lower signals" a lot of the delay of
the
re-association could be the rate negotiation. I firmly believe that
this
setting should be disabled on both sides and all connections forced to
2Mps
for stability reasons. I have found that to be the best. Even to drop
back
to 1 Mps to provide stability is better than a non-working intermittent
connection.
Also, what level of encryption are you using if any? 128 bit to all
clients
is pretty intense and as far as I am concerned unneccesary. If a
customer
is doing transactions that are that sensitive to privacy it should be
done
thorugh HTTPS, VPN, or some other means of 128 bit security. I am using
64
bit across the radio link. As a provider it is all about best effort
but
still providing performance because that is what customers want.
